Culture needs daily emotion nudges

Wherever one goes , the moot point about driving Safety centres around driving a positive culture. Sadly culture cannot be easily metricised . It can at best be palpable from what is generally noticed around with common sense. The debate on whether some countries have better civic sense is culture related. However it has to become a shared purpose for the entire mass to be galvanised around such behaviour. Culture built as part of the fabric of the very basis of living and handed down generations has huge stored energy. Otherwise it exerts huge inertia to change to adapt to a common purpose. Safety is a great equalizer and is that transformation that can change culture . Whether we value human life is part of our ethos and ethics. If we do so then Safety gets emboldened to reinforce culture. It is that reciprocal sense of someone watching over my back that gives momentum to culture. How do we move from a rock resisting inertia to bringing momentum in Safety.

  1. We must build trust and relationships between each other. If we do not show the same sensitivity and walk the talk we may appear doublespeak.
  2. Decision making always should be people centred. Am I pushing people to take undue risks by putting undue pressure.
  3. Situational awareness is again lead by example. I must be sensitive to others’ risks and get everyone to perceive the risks as sharply as I do.
  4. I must mean a lot when I tell people that I care for them and their family and thus want work to be in line with my expectations.
  5. Its a daily nibble of small actions on the ground that leaves a lasting feeling that people are really cared for.
