Deterrence meets Defense

Deterrence is just one part of defense.

Many approaches towards Safety is towards strengthening deterrence. There is overemphasis on systems and documentation. But for Safety the work would have to be done in the trenches. Risks will not diasppear through deterrence. Deep engagements are required to understand the culture and the dynamics in those trenches to combat risks.

Some of most effective approaches require meaningful interventions and engaging conversations. Decoding the risks perception and polishing approaches towards handling risks. Embedding the intrinsic belief that all incidents are preventable and can be done so with enough pre planning of the jobs to executed. It’s not the job safety analysis or the process hazard analysis that is adequate. We need to conduct a comprehensive human factor analysis. The aspects of fatigue, mental alertness, competencies and sharpness to novelty in work situation are key.

Safety has moved from engineering intervention and process analysis to human psychology. Direct human approaches are very essential. Towards that endeavour sufficient diligence is require on those trenches and not just reams of online assessments.
