You are not born with Safety . It doesn’t flow through your genes. However values flow and Safety is one such personal value that is nurtured over the years through experiential awareness. Safety is more a conditioned learning throughout your life. It is the reinforcing thought every moment and at every step you take as your get more surrounded by risks. The first step one takes and falls is the first realisation of the risk and the desire to be conscious of it . That is why safety culture is so infusible and can be ingrained. It starts with organisation wanting to lead people down that path . Leaders have to train themselves to espouse shared values. Organisational values are what the top leadership thinks and articulates . While leaders have to be more vocal and be visible in their beliefs in Safety , they also have to build the relationship and trust to push the needle on the Safety culture. A famous leader said just three words in his very first opening remark to the entire organisation as he assumed office of the top job – ‘I want Zero’. That statement was powerful enough to reverberate throughout the organisation and set the tone for the organisational value. A potent intent of the leader when made unequivocally appealing is the strongest and the most direct messaging of the intent. Choice of words and mode of communicating it is key. However people will be impacted by the messaging only if there is relationship and trust. Leaders need to walk the talk. You are not born a leader either just like you are not born with Safety. But the traits are acquired as you live by your values. Safety is such value that is embodied in leadership. Leaders get recognised easily if they live by the Safety principles and show care and consistency along with communication skills that change the belief system of the organization
